In 1953, Ballard joined doo-wop group the Royals, which had beforehand been found by Johnny Otis and signed to Federal Information(a division of King Information), in Cincinnati. Ballard joined Henry Sales space, Charles Sutton, Sonny Woods and Alonzo Tucker within the group, changing earlier singer Lawson Smith.
The Royals launched “Get It” (1953), an R&B track with presumably sexually oriented lyrics, which some radio stations refused to play,though it nonetheless made it to quantity 6 on the Billboard R&B chart.
The group then modified its title to the Midnighters to keep away from confusion with the “5” Royales. In 1954, Ballard wrote a track known as “Work with Me, Annie” that was drawn from “Get It”. It turned the Midnighters’ first main R&B hit, spending seven weeks at #1 on the R&B charts and likewise promoting nicely in mainstream markets, together with the reply songs “Annie Had a Child” and “Annie’s Aunt Fannie”; all have been banned by the FCC from radio air play. Their third main hit was “Attractive Methods”, a track that cemented the band’s popularity as some of the risqué teams of the time.
That they had 4 different R&B chart hits in 1954–55, however no others till 1959, by which era the group was billed as “Hank Ballard and The Midnighters” with their label modified from Federal to King, the mother or father label. Between 1959 and 1961 that they had a number of extra each on the R&B and Pop charts, beginning with “Teardrops on Your Letter”, a quantity 4 R&B hit in 1959 that had as its B-side the Ballard-written track “The Twist”.
A number of months later, Chubby Checker’s cowl model of the track went to #1 on the pop charts. It could return to the highest of the charts once more in 1962 the one track within the rock and roll period to achieve #1 in two totally different non-consecutive years.
Ballard and the Midnighters had a number of different hit singles in 1962, together with the Grammy-nominated “Finger Poppin’ Time” (1960) and “Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go” (1960) which hit quantity 7 and quantity 6, respectively, on the Billboard pop charts.
